Hello all,

Before I go ahead with a tattoo I wanted to double check the translation:

The saying is “Upon the Plains” Plains referring to a hypothetical battlefield.

The translation I have received is “Ar na magha”

Does this seem right?

Thanks in advance

It is a bit old fashioned. I have two editions of Dinneen (an older dictionary), the older one has a lengthener (síneadh fada) on the first a, the other not:

Ar na mágha (1904)
Ar na magha (1927)

Perhaps the first was a misprint?

In old script:

Ar na maġa
Ar na máġa

ġ = gh

In modern Irish, it would be spelled:

Ar na mánna (note that the official plural form has changed)

Another option is to use the word machaire "plain", which can also mean "a battlefield":

Ar na machairí "On the plains"

In old script:

Ar na maċairí

Thank you!

That is very helpful.

Do you have any recommendations on how to learn the correct pronunciation of the words?
