Hello,

I found a song called "A Mharcaigh ón Mhumhain" (Horseman From Munster) recorded in Coolea, Ireland performed by Peggy Scanlon in the year 1951 sung entirely in Irish. I could not even begin to transcribe the words or translate it. The bottom line is that the song is.........beautiful. If anyone out there can tell me what the song is about I would greatly appreciate it.

The site where I found it has many songs sung in Irish recorded in Ireland during 1951-1953 free to listen to on the net. Be sure to listen to part 1 and 2.

She has indeed a lovely voice.
I couldn't make out every word. But I think I got most of it.
Other here will be able to correct and fill in what I have missed.

ar mo chuairt thríd an mbaile gur b’ainm rath Cúil,
sea dhearcas an ainnir ag bagairt ?? a súl,
nach dhruigis in aice sé duine acu dúirt
... a bhean an bhaile seo a mharcaigh an mhumhan
nach dhruigis ina haice le taithneach dá glór
d’iarras don ainnir a hainm a dúirt
mairéad ní cheallaigh sé an freagra a dúirt
go céad míle maire tú t-ainm a shúir
o d’ardaigh sí lei mé is do laois ar an n-ól...
lionn isteach duine is fiche le ceoil
thit an chuid eile ar meisce faoin mbord
is d’fhanas leis an ainnir is faillíoch go leor

On my way through the village of Rath Cúil
I spotted the beauty giving me the eye
When I got near one of them said ??
???woman of this village here is the munster horseman ??
didn’t I get near her with the beauty of her voice
I asked the beauty her name
Mairéad Ní cheallaigh was the answer I was given
“a hundred thousand blessings on your name sister”
she carried me with her and I starting drinking ?????
21 people filled [the house] playing music
the others fell drunk under the table
and I stayed with the beauty, fairly neglected ???

And she said in her interview that she got the song from the famous Cúl Aodha composer - Diarmuid Ó Ríordáin.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.
