Hi everybody.

When I first came to Ireland a few years ago, I felt immediately extremly related to the culture, contry and people.

Since I´m 16years old I wanted to get a tattoo with a (for me) special saying.
I´d like to get it in Irish, so maybe you could help me get it translated?

Maybe I´ll once learn it myself, I plan to come and work in Ireland for a certain time in the future...

The saying ist out of a poem by Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

"By gracious powers wonderfully sheltered"

honestly, the original version is nearer to the way I understand it myself.

"Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen"

Somebody already translated it for me but I should get in confirmed before getting it inked into my skin ;) so I´d be very happy if you could help me!

This is the 1st translation, but the translator wasn´t very happy about it himself:

"Trí chumhacht mhaith atáimid faoi dhídean iontach"

Thanx 4 ur help!

Faoi choimirce iontach cumhachtaí maithe

Aber du sollst ask for confirmation or other versions (ich habe mein schule[?]-Deutsch vergessen).

(Anyone for "dea-chumhachtaí"?)

Ich soll auf eine Bestätigung warten? (I´m meant to wait for confirmation)
Beziehungsweise nach einer Bestätigung fragen? (I should ask for confirmation)?

Thanks for your help, I will.
It´s quite different to the first version...and I don´t have a clue... ;)

I think that's nice and concise. (dea- could work too, but best to wait to ask a native speaker about that one.)

Just so that you understand the structure of the Irish, Anduril:

Faoi choimirce iontach cumhachtaí maithe
"Under wonderful protection of good(ly) powers"

The "of" is achieved by use of the genitive case.

That's a good point, but not one I can answer. Errigal is usually much stronger at genitive constructions than I am.

I take it, then, that it would be required in CO, Scooby?

Faoi choimirce iontach cumhachtaí maithe

versus

Faoi choimirce iontach chumhachtaí maithe

Can anyone else confirm or correct or otherwise comment?

I've...er... never quite got round to learning yon genitive+ séimhiú thing properly , but I did have this vague memory - couldn't be arsed to check at the time, though - that one of the exceptions to the rule whereby an indefinite noun in the genitive is lhenited when "governed" by a fem. sing. noun not in the genitive is (I've just checked GGBC 4:16):

má tá an ginideach cáilithe: oíche gaoithe móire; bean baile mhóir.

Another exception, which I wasn't aware of but seems also to apply here:

ar lorg ainm theibí nuair nach ginideach ainm bhriartha ná ginideach comhaisnéise a bheadh i gceist: aois gadhair; airde fir; inteacht mná ach cúis gháire [ghearáin/mhaghaidh]

If I haven't misread or misunderstood it -a definite possibility, my eyes having glazed over mere seconds in - that seems to suggest cumhachtaí.

But Anduril seems not to be interested any more...
