I have just been looking at a few translation sites http://www.all-translation.com/translation/irish/ and
http://imtranslator.net/translation/irish/translation/.

They seem "ok" for translating Irish to English for simple sentences, but are shite at translaing English to Irish.

for instance if you put in "hata an bhuachalla" you'll get the boy's hat. However if you type "the boy's hat" and translate you'll get "an buachaill hata"!
I guess they get far more practice with English than Irish so the grammar and overall structure is more likely to be correct.

I put "Tá mé go maith" into "alltranlation.com" and it came out with "GCSE"
The imtranslator got it right but it got it directly from Google.

Google Translate is good for getting the jest of of the meaning, it is the best of the online ones. I use it myself often with Welsh. But all online translators do a bad job of minority languages. There aren't enough sources online for them to "learn" from. And apparently Google, being so popular, is now picking up it's own bad translations online and feeding it into the database so the circle of bad translations go on.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

I typed in meacan dearg and got back the same old "red meacan" instead of "carrot" that we get at Google translate. About a year ago, Bríd and I tried to teach Google that meacan dearg is "carrot" (there is a menu purportedly for "teaching" Google new words). It still hasn't picked it up.

Precisely - a complete joke.
